Application Thickness3–8mm (thin-bed)15–30mm (thick-bed)
Material Consumption4–6 kg/m²15–25 kg/m²
Slump ResistanceExcellent (no sagging on walls)Poor (tiles slide on walls)
Water RetentionHigh (no pre-soaking tiles needed)Low (tiles must be soaked)
WorkabilityMix with water onlyRequires sand mixing, skill-dependent

Application Checklist

  • [ ] Select grade based on tile size and location (wall vs floor)
  • [ ] Substrate must be solid, clean, and level (±3mm / 2m)
  • [ ] Mix to a smooth, lump-free paste; let rest 5 minutes, remix
  • [ ] Apply with correct notch trowel size:
    • Small tiles (up to 200mm): 6mm notch
    • Medium tiles (200–400mm): 8mm notch
    • Large tiles (400mm+): 10mm notch
  • [ ] Use double-buttering (apply adhesive to both substrate and tile back) for tiles larger than 400mm
  • [ ] Press firmly and shift slightly to collapse ridges
  • [ ] Open time: install within 20 minutes of spreading adhesive
  • [ ] Do not add extra cement or sand to pre-mixed tile adhesive

5. Floor Adhesive (地板胶)

Types by Flooring Material

Flooring TypeRecommended AdhesiveKey Properties
Solid woodPU adhesive or elastic MS polymerFlexible, moisture-tolerant
Engineered woodSolvent-free acrylic or silane-basedLow VOC, fast set
LVT / SPCPressure-sensitive acrylicRe-positionable, water-resistant
Rubber flooringContact adhesive or water-based dispersionStrong bond, flexible
CarpetPressure-sensitive or hot-meltReleasable (for carpet tiles)

VOC Considerations

Adhesive TypeTypical VOC LevelVentilation Required
Solvent-based contact adhesiveHigh (200–600 g/L)Yes, 48+ hours
Water-based acrylicLow (< 50 g/L)Minimal
MS PolymerVery Low (< 10 g/L)Minimal
Solvent-free PULow (< 30 g/L)24 hours

Rule: Always choose water-based or solvent-free floor adhesives for occupied residential spaces. Verify VOC compliance with GB 18583 (Chinese indoor adhesive standard) or equivalent.

6. Wood Glue / PVA Adhesive (木工胶)

Types

TypeColor When DryWater ResistanceSet TimeUse
White PVA (白乳胶)TransparentNone (interior only)30 min clamp, 24 hr cureIndoor furniture, cabinetry
Yellow PVA (黄胶)AmberModerate (D2)30 min clampInterior wood, trim
Cross-linked PVA (D3/D4)Transparent/amberHigh (exterior grade)1–2 hr clampOutdoor furniture, boats
Urea-Formaldehyde (脲醛胶)Hard, brittleGoodFast (with catalyst)Plywood, particleboard manufacturing
EVA Hot Melt (热熔胶)TransparentNoneInstantEdge banding, quick assembly

PVA Application Tips

  • Apply thin, even coat to ONE surface only
  • Clamp for minimum 30 minutes at 20°C
  • Full cure takes 24 hours before sanding or finishing
  • Clean excess with damp cloth before drying
  • Shelf life: 12 months unopened; discard if lumpy or separated

VOC Note on Wood Glues

  • Standard PVA: Very low VOC, safe for indoor use
  • Urea-formaldehyde: Releases formaldehyde; avoid in residential applications where possible; use E0/E1 graded products
  • Polyurethane wood glue: Moderate VOC during cure, inert after cure

7. Polyurethane Foam Sealant (发泡胶 / PU发泡剂)

Types

TypeExpansionBest For
High-expansionExpands 2–3x volumeLarge gaps (> 20mm), void filling
Low-expansionExpands 1.2–1.5xWindow/door frames (prevents bowing)
Gun-gradePrecise application, controlled expansionProfessional work, narrow gaps
Straw-gradeDIY use, disposableOne-off small jobs

Application Checklist

  • [ ] Choose low-expansion foam for window/door frames to avoid distortion
  • [ ] Fill gap only 1/3 to 1/2 full (foam expands)
  • [ ] Dampen substrate slightly for better adhesion
  • [ ] Trim excess after full cure (typically 2–4 hours)
  • [ ] Cut surface must be sealed with silicone or paint (UV degrades foam)
  • [ ] Never use in gaps narrower than 5mm or wider than 80mm without multiple passes

8. VOC and Health Considerations

VOC Levels by Adhesive Category

CategoryVOC RangeIndoor Air Quality ImpactRecommendations
Silicone sealantVery low (post-cure)Minimal after 24 hrsChoose neutral, anti-mold for bathrooms
EpoxyLow–ModerateModerate during mixing/cureVentilate during use; inert after cure
Solvent-based contact adhesiveHighSignificant for 48–72 hrsAvoid in residential; use water-based alternative
Water-based PVA/acetateVery lowNegligibleSafe for all indoor use
PU foam (uncured)ModerateModerate for 4–8 hrsVentilate; inert after trim
Tile adhesive (cement-based)NoneNoneDust hazard during mixing — wear mask
MS PolymerVery lowNegligibleBest all-around low-VOC option

Key Standards

  • GB 18583-2008: Chinese national standard for indoor decorative adhesives (VOC limits)
  • GREENGUARD Gold: Low emission certification for indoor air quality
  • EC1 Plus (EMICODE): European standard, lowest emission class
  • A+ (French VOC label): Highest indoor air quality rating

Practical VOC Reduction Tips

  1. Choose products labeled E0, GREENGUARD, or EC1 Plus
  2. Ventilate continuously during and after adhesive application
  3. Allow 72-hour cure period before occupying renovated space
  4. Use air purifiers with activated carbon during curing
  5. Avoid mixing different adhesive brands on the same job
  6. Store adhesives sealed and in cool conditions to prevent premature off-gassing
